A rare and excellent pair of Minton plaques illustrating a pair of finely clad cavaliers. These were made as plaques but used as tiles in a fireplace and it is wonderful that they have survived so well as they are very high relief but have only very slight damage. Excellent quality of modelling and moulding both the bas relief and the indented background, these were hand made in the pottery rather than pressed in the tileworks. Later examples were pressed in the tileworks still they are most scarce too, given pattern number 2530 and so pressed examples date from around 1892/3, these will be earlier. Brilliant mahogany coloured glaze and the high relief catches the light wonderfully - and makes them difficult to photograph!

Two very tiny surface chips, high relief and most brilliant glaze.

Tiny chip bottom left corner, two very tiny edge chips, a little wear to the rim of his boot and a few pinprick marks near mid left chips. Totally insignificant marks, high relief and most brilliant glaze.

Versos hollowed out to lighten the weight for hanging as plaques. Top edges each have a pair of pierced holes for hanging cords.

Detail of impressed marks, none are year marks.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
