This tile has had a charmed life for it has
suffered zero damage over the last 100 years the
only mark being the corner trimmed for the roiginal
fixing. With no crazing and no surface marks this
an exceptional example of the tile. Style/technique: Pictorial émaux
ombrants An excellent design of a Staffordshire Bull
Terrier in the émaux ombrants technique
superbly modelled and moulded and glazed in a
rich 'old gold' glaze. This design by George
Cartlidge and signed with his monogram at the
bottom right. Few dog subjects are to be found
on victorian/edwardian tiles especially in
majolica and this is the best. Verso very clean with embossed pattern
number, Sherwins trade mark and patent
locks. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430
pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format and on
screen is about the size as it would be in real
life at the same distance. A larger 120 dpi image
also in maximum quality JPEG format can be
forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
