8" Rare Nature Study Block Printed & Coloured Tile

A fabulous natural study design of a Peacock butterfly and flowering branch block printed in black and painted with colours. One of a set of six butterflies, early tiles from the 1870s and representing the state of the art in colourful wall tiles.

Verso very clean, usual embossed Minton Hollins etc with printed registration mark which unusually is clearly legible due to its position on the earlier flatter grip pattern. The design registration is recorded in the National Archives as seen below, the registration refers to the border pattern as was usual.

Condition is very good, rim chips are clearly visible but none impose excessively on the face of the tile which would be well framed as such designs are eminently suited. Half a dozen very tiny surface chips which for the most part is excellent with a clean bright glaze. These tiles tend to suffer wear and flaking to the enamels especially the pink but this has perfect colours, the lighter marks on the green are painting flaws.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
