Very small chip where the stem meets the left
edge, very minor surface marks. Style/technique: Art nouveau majolica A fabulous and rare art nouveau design,
moulded in high relief and painted in four
colours, super colours and brilliant glazes, an
outstanding quality tile. High relief art
nouveau designs are rare also this design being
clearly intended for a frieze was used mostly
for wall tiling so rarely if ever appears in
fireplaces and furniture from whence most
antique tiles are sourced. Not marked and unattributed, other tiles from
the same installation were by Maw and Carter so
either is best bet. Few companies attempted high
relief majolica tiles but both Maw and Carter
did (it appears that there may have been a
trading relationship between the two companies
perhaps Maw making tiles for Carter) however the
pattern number not consistent with either so
maybe Maws made this for a third company. Verso impressed version of front design to
give a constant thickness of clay and make for a
more durable tile. Very clean, a little clay
loss where cement has been removed, painted
pattern number. Slender chip lower top left, surface is perfect
and the glazes most brilliant The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430
pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format and on
screen is about the size as it would be in real
life at the same distance. A larger 120 dpi image
also in maximum quality JPEG format can be
forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
