• Style/technique: Floral barbotine • Manufacturer: Sherwin & Cotton • Dimensions: 6" x 6" • Date: circa 1900	An excellent barbotine tile with a background in mottled purplish-brown, quite the most uncommon background for Sherwin & Cotton's barbotine range. Pattern number RMB791 indicates that this is late, probably edwardian, and the design goes someway to suggest that too being stylised and symmetrical, quite different to the nature study quality of many of Sherwin's barbotine tiles, more like a cross between arts and crafts movement style and art nouveau. Verso very clean, generic grid, Staffordshire Knot in triangle badge, pattern number incised.
The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
