• Style/technique: Nature study handpainted • Manufacturer: Doulton & Co • Dimensions: 6" x 6" • Date: circa 1880	An uncommon tile from the studios of Doulton & Co at Lambeth, a handpainted study of a cow drinking from a stream. Doulton & Co for the most part produced more stylised works in the aesthetic, arts & crafts and pre-raphaelite genres. Ardent collectors will note the similarity of the animal with that from the Animals of the Farm series engraved by William Wise for Mintons Ltd. It would appear that both have the same source material been inspired by Studies of Cows by Robert Hills, 1769 - 1844, a noted artist (The Tate has a small collection) whose works have an emphasis on nature studies and rural themes. Verso clean, grid with triple X, hand painted Doulton & Co. Whilst most Doulton Lambeth tiles have a rubber stamp mark other examples with painted marks have been noted including and indeed very similarly on tiles painted by margaret M Armstrong.
The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
