A few very tiny > minute rim chips, surface
perfect apart from a few very light scratches only
seen when held just so to catch them in the light.
Very pretty and most brilliantly glazed. Style/technique:
Arts & crafts A fabulous and rare Thomas Elsley arts &
crafts tile. Made in Holland to a design by
Elsley, hand made and hand painted four fabulous
colours. Very crisp and bright, excellent
precise work and indeed far superior to the
dutch imports for Morris & Co. The colours
quite reminiscent of iznik style designs but the
design very english arts & crafts. Many tiles are attributed to Elsley but few
can be verified this is one of just three
designs he registered and bears the pattern
number and design registration number. Thomas
Elsley was an ironmonger of great repute working
from premises at 32 Great Portland St.
London. Verso very clean just slight mortar residue,
plain in the dutch manner, pattern number and
design registration number boldly
stencilled. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430
pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format and on
screen is about the size as it would be in real
life at the same distance. A larger 120 dpi image
also in maximum quality JPEG format can be
forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
