Minor rim and surface marks.
Style/technique: Aesthetic
majolica An embossed majolica tile with a repeating
floral design in the all over arts & crafts
movement style, a durable buff clay tile glazed
with a rich mahogany glaze. Leonard Atkinson Shuffrey lived in Ealing a
had offices at 38 Welbeck St, Cavendish Sq,
London W, an architect working in the era of the
arts & crafts movement he worked with
designs by many of the famous names. Austwick
comments that L A Shuffrey designed lustre tiles
for Edwards in imitation of William de Morgan's
work, Shuffrey & Co registered two tile
designs in 1885 presumably designed by Leonard.
It is assumed this is also a design by L A
Shuffrey and was likely made by Edwards or
Maw. Verso perfectly clean, embossed Shuffrey
& Co. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430
pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format and on
screen is about the size as it would be in real
life at the same distance. A larger 120 dpi image
also in maximum quality JPEG format can be
forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
