Very tiny marks to the left and bottom edges
only, surface is perfect. Style/technique: Floral Print &
tint A super pretty and bright colourful tile of
blossoms in a trellis encapsulating the vitality
of springtime. Nicely printed in warm brown,
pink and three greens completing the
palette. Contrary to accepted thought I am not
convinced that Carter made their own biscuit at
this stage rather they bought in from Stoke upon
Trent for Carter patterns appear on biscuit
associated with other companies, No doubt Carter
made floor tiles after taking over Hamworthy but
I suggest that wall tile pressing may not have
been instituted until around 1910. Their
embossed majolica tiles may have been pressed by
Maw or Marsden too, presumably, and this applies
to both types, they decorated the bought biscuit
but it may be that some designs were entirely
manufactured elsewhere. Such nuances are however of minor interest to
lovers of tiles as an expression of decorative
art and it is for sure that Carters registered
the design. Verso very clean but some smoke stain, clear
pattern number and design registration
number. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430
pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format, a
larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG
format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
