Four very tiny rim chips, glazed over factory
chip bottom edge. Surface has slight touches of
rubbing to high points and a very tiny chip top
left leaf, spot of misplaced brown glaze top right
leaf. Glazes not as brilliant as one may expect for
these colours but only noticable wehn caught just
so in the light.
Style/technique: Art Nouveau
majolica A good full but light art nouveau design one
of few from Pilkington that are seen with any
regularity and then not often. Pilkington like
Maw and Minton Hollins were more concerned with
supplying the market for mass tiling of walls
than the decorative market dominated by Richards
and Boote. Nice flow of the line, well moulded
as usual for Pilkington although the glazed over
factory flaw on the bottom edge is unusual,
their majolicas quality was usually near the
top. Autumnal colours, pleasing and relaxing,
warm brown ground, nice bright yellow flower and
authentic green foliage. A similar 3" x 6"
design was registered by Piilkington in
1904. Verso some smoke and rust stain, embossed P
in opposing corners. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430
pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format, a
larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG
format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
