Top corners cropped for the original
installation, tiny chip bottom left corner and
another on the bottom edge near the right. A little
wear on the raised outline centre of the top petal,
no other surface damage, glaze surfaces are
perfect.
Style/technique: Art Nouveau
majolica A bold floral 'cloisonné' majolica
tile in four rich colours and with super blue
flower and bud. Cloisonné was adopted by
Pilkington's and others to describe designs with
raised outlines, as in its original brass
namesake the outlines keep the coloured glasses
(glazees) separate. This is a very early design
for Pilkington and possibly their first, the
design continued in production for several years
and this tile is thought to date from the first
few years of the 20thC. Verso very clean, embossed 'P's, pattern
number R1 written in pencil. This is the correct
pattern number and suggests that this is the
first pattern of this technique or indeed their
first pattern of all kinds but the record is not
clear, R prefix is taken to represent
cloisonné designs, those with a raised
outline. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430
pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format, a
larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG
format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
