A super pair of early art nouveau panels perhaps well
suited to someone of Scottish descent as they well represent
thistles! The full design fills the tiles and as often with
Godwins wares shows a gothic influence. Wonderfully flowing
designs yet retaining the sharp, spiky feel of the
leaves.
Godwins were one of the greatest tile makers of the
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, they specialised
in slabbed tiles and so their tiles tend to be more
precisely made (the edges not hidden by frames). Their tiles
commanded premium prices, in a priced 1905 catalogue their
panels are the most expensive amongst a selection of panels
from major manufacturers of the day.
There are two tiny edge chips and a handful of very tiny
edge chips, very few, very minor surface marks. It is
incredibly rare to get tile panels in such outstanding
condition - if they were brand new one wouldn't fault them
let alone them being one hundred years old.
