A nice pair of victorian floral panels, great victoriana with rich high gloss glazes and bright colourful flowers. The floral tile design is believed to date from 1897 so these would be in keeping with late victorian and edwardian houses.

Generally excellent condition, chip top corner will be hidden by the top plate in most cast iron fireplaces, one flower tile has a partial hairline which looks like a slightly darker crazing line on the front and doesn't go through to the back, one flower tile has some surface wear near the bottom left which will partly be hidden by the iron frame. Only a few minor marks and manufacturing imperfections will be visible when fitted.

This kind of arrangement became very popular during the 1890s and continued in to the edwardian era when with art nouveau the proportion of ten similar tiles increased. In the 1870s most fireplaces were still all cast iron without tiles, in the 1880s it was more usual to have ten tiles the same or very much more rarely five tile panels - they were much more expensive. This arrangement with majolica bands was more expensive than ten flower tiles and so the popularity was a deliberate design choice rather than an economic choice.
