An excellent pair of turn of the century tile panels, ideal for cast iron fireplaces but also well suited to washstands and installations. Warm colours and brilliant glazes especially suited for working fireplaces when the glow of the fire reflects from the brilliant and deeply coloured glazes.

Mottles were produced in the 19thC but became especially popular in the Edwardian era. Usually in tessallated designs - those made up of many smaller tiles, for example in fireplace slabs and washstand backs when they were glued to board, or in standard size tiles divided to imitate smaller tiles. Tessallated and mottled tiles appear in Sherwin & Cotton's 1892 catalogue and they registered some designs in 1898.

They were no less expensive than other majolica tiles of the time in fact some one-colour brick pattern tiles were amongst the more expensive majolicas. Selection of plains and mottles was a design choice and they were most fashionable in some quarters, the colours are warm and homely and the glazes the most brilliant of all.

In excellent condition, a few small chips which will be hidden completely in most fireplaces or of so little visual impact to be totally insignificant, a little soot in the crazing which similarly is almost impossible to see and minor surface marks.
